Recommendation on Smart Glasses

Educators may ban smart glasses during assessments. Smart glasses provide similar functionality to smartphones. They are available from multiple manufacturers, are connected to internet, contain small cameras, and have a display within the lens.

The university’s recommended syllabus statement and Policy G-9 state that students may use only sources permitted by their instructor. Some students may have prescription smart glasses, so instructors should also consider adding a statement like the following to their syllabus and/or assessment instructions:

Smart glasses and other similar technologies are not permitted during quizzes and exams. Students with prescription smart glasses should bring other glasses (non-technology-enabled) to quizzes and exams.

Note that, beginning fall 2025, the Pollock Testing Center and the Student Disability Resources (SDR) Exam Center will also prohibit smart glasses during testing. If a student provides documentation that appears to be from SDR listing the use of smart glasses as an accommodation, instructors should confirm with SDR before allowing.
